Wasted talent

One of my uncles is wondering about his hearing. He sometimes finds he has to turn on the subtitles (if there are any) to make out what actors in films and TV dramas are saying if turning up the sound to a roar doesn’t help.
    And yet, he reports that he can make out every word of what is being said in adverts when he’s in the kitchen. That’s where all the competent sound engineers go? Into advertising?
