Boris Johnson, in his Daily Mail column, dived into his dictionary and came up with hoplite – a heavily armed foot-soldier in the fighting forces of ancient Greece and a word familiar to most ex-grammar school pupils.
Also a word which invites us to wonder if there were ever regiments of hopheavy soldiers who were either totally unstoppable or too laden down to move.
