Boris Johnson mentioned paraquat in his Saturday essay in the Daily Disaster. Never heard of it myself but one of my correspondents has.
Over 50 years ago, he was the co-author of a scientific paper on the fascinating photochemistry of this weed destroyer.
Its herbicidal properties were first recognized by researchers at the now defunct ICI in the 1950s, and it is still used today despite wide-spread bans in areas like the EFU. But carefully, as it can do in humans as readily as weeds.
