Redundant?

One of my contacts has been getting phone calls from his water company with reports on a big leak, which caused low or no water pressure – now fixed.
    The message on the phone advised him to go to the company’s website for updates and did the “double-U, double-U, double-U” bit before the address. Which left me wondering if anyone ever types that ‘www.’ because I always type just the name of the site and its extension.
